You might be nearly as ancient as me! Those black pizza discs were also called 'albums'. They came in cardboard sleeves called, oddly enough, 'album covers' on which there were often memorable works of art. Way, way back was a famous and very popular album cover for a jazz band called The Dave Brubeck Quartet. An extremely famous illustrator for these things who came much later was a chap called Bernie Taupin, who illustrated album covers for (Sir) Elton John.
